Disability Celebration Month

In March, San Diego State University is commemorating Disability Celebration Month through a series of exciting community events. Disability organizations date back to the 1800s, but progress for disability rights experienced significant growth in the second half of the 20th century. During this time, the disability rights community spent many years advocating for change. It was not until 1990 that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed. The ADA, and the subsequent ADA Amendments Act of 2008, are well known civil rights legislation prohibiting discrimination against disabled people and continue to shape the disability community today. While SDSU celebrates disability in March, it is important to acknowledge the legacy of Disability Pride month, which occurs in July and is linked to the passage of the ADA. Disabled thinkers, artists, politicians, and activists have had an incredible impact on society and we are honored to celebrate disabled contributions to our campus and larger culture throughout the month.
